10 Screen-Free Adventures Your Kids Will Actually Remember
Childhood goes fast.
Really fast.
And when we think back to our own childhoods, it's rarely the toys we remember most.
It's the adventures.
The camping trips.
The treasure hunts.
The bike rides that somehow turned into all-day missions.
So if you're looking for a few ideas for this weekend, here are 10 simple adventures your kids will love.
1. Build A Fort (Or A Treehouse)
Weather not playing ball?
Build the ultimate indoor fort using couch cushions, blankets and every pillow in the house.
If you've got the space outdoors, challenge the kids to build a nature cubby or treehouse using sticks, rope and whatever treasures they can find.
2. Treasure Hunt With Clues
This one never fails.
Grab a few treats from the supermarket and hide them somewhere around the house or backyard.
Create clues that lead to the next location.
Examples:
"Dad uses this to surf waves."
"The place where we keep the ice cream."
"The machine that cleans our clothes."
Watching them race around solving clues is half the fun.
3. Sunrise Or Sunset Beach Picnic
Simple but magic.
Grab some fish and chips, sushi, prawns or whatever your family loves.
Throw a picnic rug in the car and head to the beach for sunrise or sunset.
No rush.
No plans.
Just good food and time together.
4. Rock Collecting & Painting Challenge
Head out for a walk and let everyone collect their favourite rocks.
Then come home and paint them.
Animals.
Funny faces.
Rainbows.
Monsters.
Pinterest is full of inspiration if you need ideas.
5. Pick A Country & Create A Themed Dinner
Choose a country.
Spain?
Italy?
Mexico?
Japan?
Cook a traditional meal together, play music from that country and learn a few words in the language.
Bonus points for dressing up.
6. Nature Scavenger Hunt
Create a list of things the kids need to find.
Examples:
-
Something blue
-
Something that smells pretty
-
A leaf bigger than your hand
-
Something with five petals
-
Something that feels soft
Simple, free and surprisingly entertaining.
7. Backyard Camping
Can't get away this weekend?
Bring the camping trip home.
Set up a tent.
Build a fire pit if you can.
Toast marshmallows.
Cook dinner outside.
Sometimes the adventure doesn't need to be far away.
8. Bike Adventure Day
Let the kids plan the route.
Give them a map and choose a few fun destinations:
-
Ice cream shop
-
Bakery
-
Playground
-
Beach
-
Creek
-
Local park
Ride bikes, scooters or skateboards and follow the route together.
9. Family Talent Show
This one is guaranteed entertainment.
The kids can prepare:
-
A magic show
-
A dance performance
-
A fashion parade
-
A comedy act
-
A singing performance
Parents become the judging panel.
And last one our personal favourite.
10. The Great Adventure Challenge
Give the kids a list of missions:
- Climb a tree
- Find a feather
- Spot a bird
- Build something from sticks
- Jump in a puddle
- Skip 100 times
- Find a bug
- Balance on a log
They tick them off throughout the weekend and earn "Adventure Points."
At Lokal Folk, we're big believers that childhood doesn't need to be perfectly planned.
Some of the best memories come from the simplest adventures.
So pick one, give it a go this weekend, and let us know how it goes.
And if you capture any adventures along the way, we'd love to see them.
